TEST - WE HAVE DECIDED ON THIS ONE, AS IT IS CLEAR, BOLD AND WILL ALSO WORK WELL ON A MISSING POSTER. (Bernard MT Condensed)

Possible tension music that we could use.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ta8v0pNKv7E&playnext=1&list=PL2A42ED30F5BDF701&index=1

We may use this heart beat tension music to help build up the tension from the very beginning of the thriller. The heart beat music will be in the back ground when the camera zooms in on the very first missing poster. This will then be helping build the suspense of not knowing what is going to happen throughout the rest of the thriller.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBiqEFDQtT4&feature=related

This piece of tension music will be very fitting when Samantha is walking along the path, and when she is running her fingers along the park bars. This is because this scene shows Samantha getting ready to do something, so having this music helps build up the feeling of not knowing what is coming next. The music also will help make the audience feel the tension of the thriller.

This would be good to create a climax, and it mixes about a lot(pitch and tempo) so would work well with the tension.

Voodoo Doll Research

We are thinking about including a voodoo doll in the film. We thought this would create a mysterious atmosphere, especially as the audience are not going to see my face but they will see the voodoo doll. So create the fear of the unknown.
Voodoo Dolls
Voodoo Doll

The Voodoo doll is used to represent the spirit of a specific person. You can address the doll as if you are talking to that person, requesting a change in attitude, influencing the person to act in accordance with your wishes, your desires.

Once in possession of an authentic Voodoo doll, you can request the doll to call upon powerful forces known as Loa. You can perform a sim[ple but effective ritual to fulfill a specific dream, an urgent deisre. This timeless ceremony is carried out to persuade the spirits to exert their influence in this world.

Voodoo believers accept the existence of one god. Below this almighty god, spirits (Loa) rule over the world's affairs in matter of family, love, happiness, justice, wealth, revenge.

Regardless of your background, regardless of your beliefs, the ancient art of Voodoo embraces you. Once you open you heart and mind to this awsome power, miraculous changes in your life could bring you instant money, instant love, instant happiness.

These are a few things that voodoo believers say when they want to compose a spell:
  • Make your relationship stronger, closer, more secure. Enhance compatibility, making your companion softer, nicer, sexier.
  • Return a lost love. Awaken them to your irresistible charms that will make it impossible to stay away. Soon they'll rush into your waiting arms!
  • Enrich your life with money, plentiful gifts, fabulous material possessions.
  • Wreck vengeance on the person who has wronged you, allowing them little sleep, implanting fear of you in their mind, bringing peace and respect back into your life.
  • Provide instant luck in love, companionship, career. Not last week or yesterday. Now!
  • Change other people's opinion of you.
  • Knock out barriers, smoothing the path to your future
The history of the Voodoo Doll belief:
The Voodoo doll is not used in Voodoo practices in Haiti, but rather as part of the complicated melting pot of traditions in New Orleans and the Louisiana delta areas. The Louisiana Voodoo practices combine the spiritual elements of Haitian Voodoo with the magical beliefs of Southern United States hoodoo. In the first decades of the 20th century, Voodoo dolls are believed to have been used to cause sympathetic magic on the desired recipient, sometimes in painful ways. The use of pins was not meant to cause pain in a particular area of the real person, but rather to reinforce the spell being cast.

CAMERA ANGLES AND SHOTS

These are some of the camera angles and shots we could use:

Close-up: A certain feature or part of the subject takes up most of the frame. A close up of a person usually means a close up of their face (unless specified otherwise).
Close-ups are obviously useful for showing detail and can also be used as a cut-in.

We are going to use close ups to show significant things and emphasize the strangeness of them. For example Samantha's locket being left on the floor is a clue to why the door was opejn. These close ups are good in a thriller because they emphasize clues and hint to the audience what might happen.

Extreme close-up: Gets right up and shows all the detail.

We are going to use this shot after a close up, if we want to emphasize even more. For example when the flour is on the floor ion the kitchen, we may close up and then extreme close up. This will show the audience that this is really importent.

Medium shot: The mid shot shows some part of the subject in more detail, whilst still showing enough for the audience to feel as if they were looking at the whole subject.

We are going to use this shot when filming the Femme Fatale(Samantha) as we don't want the audience to ever see her face. This is with cause a suspence, because the audience will be left in the dark about who she is, as well as what shes planning.

Long shot: It shows the whole area.
This is a shot we will use when the two females(Elle and Samantha)walk past each other, as this will show the whole body of both of them. This will show that when they walk by each other they don't know who each other are, and therefore as you can see everything there are no secrets.

Point of view shot: Shows a view from someone’s point of view.
We decided to use point of view shots when significant events happen, such as when Elle's hand is turing the door knob to open the open door properly. The point of view shot will clearly show the audience that Elle's hand is shaking and will cause extreme tension.

Over the shoulder: The shot is taken from behind someone who is looking at someone in front of them.
We thought about perhaps using this shot after the long shot of the two females walking by each other. This significant event needs to be emphasized, so therefore we may use another shot to show the event again.

High angle shot: Were the camera is above a person and is looking down on them, anywhere above the eye line. Also a high angle shows the subject from above, i.e. the camera is angled down towards the subject. This has the effect of diminishing the subject, making them appear less powerful, less significant or even submissive

This is a shot we are going to use when showing down the stairs. This will emphaize the height of the stairs and maybe make the audience feel a bit uncomfortable in their seats.

Low angle shot: Were the camera is looking up at the person, anywhere below the eye line. Also it shows the subject from below, giving them the impression of being more powerful or dominant.

We decided we may use this shot to look back up the stairs, to show the house is a bit mysterious and unnerving. Also this would contrast with looking down the stairs, which would cause a interesting effect.

Shot – reverse shot:  One character is shown looking at another character (often off-screen), and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character.

We decided not to use this shot as we don't want the audience to see Samantha's face, because it will spoil the tension that it causes when the audience doesn't know who she is.

Birds-eye view: Were the camera is above everyone and its looking down at you.
We might do a birds eye view shot of Samanthan walking along the street, because this is a shot we can use where the audience will not see her face, but seeing her high heels walking forward, will cause tension.

Worm’s eye view: A worm's-eye view is a view of an object from below, as though the observer were a worm; the opposite of a bird's-eye view.

We may use a worms eye view to show Samantha walking along the street. This would work well to show how she has a high status in the film.
Tilt up: Were the camera tracks up some one or an object.
We are going to use tilt up and down together at the same time when looking at Elle, to show her whole body and emphasize how vulnerable she is.

Tilt down: Were the camera tracks down some one or an object.

We are going to use this to go from the top of Samantha's arm, and follow it right down to her hand getting the Voodoo doll out of her bag. This will be done in slow motion to emphasize the importence of the event.
Pan: A horizontal camera movement in which the camera moves left and right.

We are going to use pan to show Samantha's surrondings when walking along. We want to use longer, wider shots when with Samantha, and smaller, closer shots when showing Elle to show that whats happening to her is key to the storyline.

Tracking: A shot in which the camera is mounted on a cart which travels along tracks. However it can also mean someone holding the camera and following a person.

We are using this shot mainly on Samantha, as she is walking aroung the road a lot.
180° rule: When filming you can’t film someone from one side then suddenly have them the opposite direction.

We are going to make sure we don't do this shot.

Costume for Femme Fatale - Samantha

We decided to have her wearing black as this colour simberlises sofistication or maybe hint she has a dark secret. We decided red heels would be appropriate as they give off a sexual vibe. The black will allow her blend in with the night. These are some pictures that have inspired our decision.

COSTUME RESEARCH

Elle - We are going to have elle wearing party clothes, as if shes coming in from a night out. These clothes will show vulnerability as she will not be well covered. Also the bright clothes will contrast well with Samantha(the sophistcated character). Elle will not be wearing a cardigan and will look cold to show that shes dumb and does prepare for the weather. We found some images that we are going to use to choose an outfit for Elle.

Ideas for thriller film.

  • Camera getting wet.
  • The day getting dark and having to stop the filming.

Resolution:-

PLANNING THE THRILLER""

RESEARCH:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxcdGgy9i_I - We looked at The Blair Witch Project, and from this we got the idea of never seeing the face of the Femme Fatale. In this thriller you never see the actual Blair Witch. This creates tension and the audience will be kept wondering, even after the film has finished.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rW97dS7_h54 - This thriller is by Hitchcock, and it's fully in black and white. We have decided that we might put the camera shots of all the rooms in the house in black and white to emphasize their importance. Also it gives the snap shots an old fashioned camera effect.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpHvvVTXDBI - In this trailer we found that they used simple objects at the beginning to set the scene. they use a spinning top, so we have decided we are going to have an extreme close up of some door bolts opening. This will contrast with the name of our thriller; 'Hidden', as opening bolts symbolises the truth coming out and the opening of a disaster.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4uaYxiV8X4 - This clip showed us many different thriller openings, and gave us many ideas;

  • Filming through trees/ looking at a scene through trees. this is a good idea as it gives the audience a sense that they are looking in on something they shouldn't be,along with the tension it creates.
  • Repetitive shots - This gave us the idea to use these to film the doll and the missing poster. We are going to flick from shot to shot to create tension and a build us to a climax.
  • Filming shadows to create a sense of not knowing who they are of. We are not going to show the Femme Fatale's face and this clip helped us make that decision.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJ2RofOEAEU - this clip has the place and the time appear in the edits on a black screen, we decided that we could use this idea, because it gives the audience some background information, and causes some tension. there is also an eerie non diegetic sound in the background that we could use to cause suspense.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OYBEquZ_j0 - We liked the editing in this clip from The Dark Night, especially where the wings are faded out, therefore we wanted to use the idea of fading the missing posters in and out in our own film. We felt this way of editing was very appropriate for a thriller, as it makes the clip seem a little spooky.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRw9vx3WZBE - We decided that in our film we might do a low angle shot of the blond female looking out of a window, as if she's searching for the person whose been in her house. This would be a quick shot just to show the females expression.

Film decisions we made:
  • We are going to have a Femme Fatale - an intelligent woman, that is mysterious. We feel that including this type of character in our thriller, will introduce a weird atmosphere.
  • To contrast with this character we are going to use the famous Hitchcock blond. We think that this dumb, naive character will contrast well with Femme Fatale.
  • We also had the idea of giving the thriller a missing person theme, as this creates mystery and keeps the audience guessing.
  • We are using cross cutting as a main device, because this will create tension, and suspense.
  • We thought hard about what we wanted to do our thriller on, and though we could use a voodoo doll as the main prop. We are going to have the voodoo doll looking the same as the blond, because this will give the audience a clue to what's going on, but not the actual answers

Editing Ideas:
  • Red writing on a black screen for the credits.
  • Writing in upper and lower case, to show the blonde's messed up mind.
  • Fading into and out of clips.
  • Having the clips of the rooms in the blonde's house in black and white, this would make them look like old photographs.
