Thiller and Horror

We decided to cut some of the shots we were going to include, because we felt that our film was more horror like than thriller. So we have done some research into the two genres:

Thriller conventions:
  • Quick cuts when editing
  • Quick camera angle changes
  • Tension music and it is pacey when appropriate.
  • May use shadows, mirrors and stairs.
  • Often uses darkness to create a mood.
  • The story is normally from the killers/victims point of view
  • The audience should be made to feel sorry for the victim.
  • It may play with your audiences' mind.
  • Credits tend to be on a black screen.
  • The most used shot should be the close-up.
  • Lots of non- diegetic sound.

ONES WE HAVE USED ARE RED

Horror Conventions:

  • Isolated, very dark lococations - eg: Alleyways.
  • Unnatural camera work.
  • Non-naturalistic or make believe characters.
  • Vicious animals.
  • Blood and Gore.
  • Suicide and Death.
  • Disruption of normality.
  • Subplot of male and female relationship.
  • Female victim.
  • Defeat of a monster.
